I had a filling today in my rear top left tooth. It is still really sore, 11 hours later, and I can't eat on that side cos of the nasty sensitivity and metallic feeling. Is this normal? I have hardly ever had any fillings so I can't remember what they are like!

Sometimes the pain can be quite severe and last for a long while particularly if there was a lot of drilling and it was a deep filling. I have had this happen and went back to the dentist thinking there was something wrong but it settled down after a day or two. It's not very nice at the time but painkillers should help. If you are concerned phone your dentist tomorrow for advice.
yes, it's not that unusual. Take a painkiller as needed. If it's stillpainful after three days or so , call the dentist back, but earlier than that what you feel is just normal discomfort - all that drilling plus you were probably uncomfortable in the chair when top back teeth are done. Good luck
This has happened to me a few times. If you still have this problem in a week's time then go back to the drntist and ask him to desensitize your tooth. They paint on what looks like clear nail varnish and tastes a bit like bananas but it works.
What they said ^.

I've spent more time in the dentist's chair than most during the course of my adult life (dental accident as a child) and ninety percent of the time when I've had problems like yours, the discomfort goes away after a day or two. If it doesn't, then go back to the dentist.

You have to remember that although you can't actually feel any pain whilst the dentist's drilling and all that, your tooth, gum and jaw are undergoing significant trauma - sometimes almost as much as if someone had punched you in the mouth. There will inevitably be bruising around the site and, just like anywhere else on your body, it may be sore for a while.
