Am I being selfish?

My school has a prizegiving ceremony each year where a person from the top class, who got the highest mark, in each subject gets an award .
This year I got the highest mark in my year for Modern Studies and so should be receiving the award.
However, this is not the case.
One of my "friends" is smarter than me and revels in attention from teachers. Last year when she didn't receive the award for this subject she kicked up a fuss and the teacher reassured her "You'll get it next year"
She has always been a favourite in the school and generally tends to be picked for everything, this annoys me as I work hard and hardly ever get recognition.
This year should have been my chance but instead my "friend" is getting the award simply for having a good reputation. She didnt even get the second highest mark, infact she came in 6th place on the results.
I worked hard all year to achieve my marks while most of the time she chatted to our other friend and passed notes back and forward to her.
Do you think Iam being selfish or petty about this ?

haha thanks YJ

I think I may actually base my letter on this, maybe leaving out just a few bits here and there as my head teacher does not have much of a sense of humour !

Thanks again
YJ's letter is spot on. You shouldn't change a word!
Well done on getting the highest marks in that subject , you should be proud of that after putting in the effort and study.
It should be you that recieves the award for highest marks obviously and I hope you can sort it out , however , if it does go to the 6th placer then you will just have to keep your head held high and remember that you know you did well.
All the best :-)

Thanks YG, wish I could give you 5, or even 10, stars !!

Thanks bigmamma,
yes I think that may end up being the case that I will just have to know myself that I done well.
Thanks again =D
If I was the headmaster and received such a letter, I would summon you to my office immediately, for daring to question my authority.
After six of the belt, you would then realise, as to who in effect, runs the school.
Furthermore, for having such a stupid name, I would administer a further six, as a deterrent to all pupils, who cannot think of a suitable pseudonym.
