The key is to finding out what causes it and then either treat or remove the cause. In many cases it is an allergy to types of food but there may be many other causes.
Many treatments just irritate the bowel even more as you are finding out. Have you tried peppermint oil?

I AM sorry to hear you have this. My friend also suffers from IBS. She says that medication made her fdel worse, so managed to relieve the symptoms by changing her diet. One of the worst culprits seemed to be milk, so she changed to soya milk, laid off spicy food and stopped eating her favourite beetroot. She's much improved now, so I don't know if any of these things might help you.
yes I definately believe that you should look into what foods are actually causing your irritable bowel - diet really can help relieve it. Would be too much info to put on here but certainly search the net - many people manage to stay pain free just by change of diet but will take a bit of playing around and finding out what is best for you. That would mean you would not need ot take tablets. Speak to someone in a herbal shop and they could advise some teas etc to try.
Keep a food diary and see what if anything makes your symptoms worse then avoid themif you can. I take peppermint oil capsules which help me but I think peppermint is in the tablets you have been given as well. I find stress makes my IBS worse as well as certain foods and yoga really helps me :)

HI confused79,My doctor had been treati ng me for cystitis for 3 years had 2 operations, scans and tests all proved negative. last weeks had what i thought was another bad attack of cystitis, saw a different doctor who told me that it was my bowel that was the problem not my bladder!Symptoms are severe diarrhoea, constant pain in my left side down near the top of my leg and bloating. Also when ive eaten it takes only half an hour before i have to rush to the loo.the tablets the doctor prescribed made me feel worse so ive just got some COLPERMIN WITH PEPPERMINT OIL lets hope that works. hope this has been of use to you . hey there, what you just described sounded just like what i had some years ago... i now avoid wheat based products, hard but with food labelling its easier. you could ask your consultant or gp to do a tTg blood test which will see if you are sensitive to gluten and therefore a coeliac. my symptoms are now much better and although i still have the odd off day its much better, my sister has severe coeliacs and doesn't touch anything with gluten in at all, she made an amazing recovery with the right diet. its a horrible thing, i never used to go out in case i needed the loo, i would never go to someone's for dinner just in case. it was awful, but with perseverance you can get to the bottom of it (pardon the pun!!) xx
