Madeleine McCann
I think all advertising for holidays to Portugal should be banned. How can anyone trust a country whose police has handled this case in such a messy way? I would defiantly not be taking my family there again. I also think that rich personalities like Sir Cliff Richard who lives there should uproot and move to a country that would spend the tax that he pays on his vineyards etc. On a better police force.
I have also decided that because I have now got the hump with Sir Cliff Richard, I will try and sell all the records that I have him and send any money that I receive to Madeleine's fund. If I can't sell them I know just the place for them on the 5th November!

I'll give you insight though into the human mind shall I? I used to work for a travel company and following the 9/11 tragedy we had a record number of calls from customers asking if we were offering cheap holidays to the States because of it.
Whatever our personal thoughts towards Madeleine, it won't stop people holidaying in Portugal.

nobody really knows how the police are handling the case, we only know what people want us to hear, portugese policing is very different to ours. the table could be turned and the portugese say we dont want tourists here who blatantly leave their children alone and go out and enjoy themselves then leave us to use our police force and finace to help find a missing child
I would hope they've already started making moves to improve things by sacking the officer in charge of this case:

Let's hope they find a good enough replacement & team to look into the disappearance of this poor little girl, although I fear it'll be too little too late.
P.S. The behaviour of the Portugal Police will not deter most people from holidaying there, although I'd think twice about going back after our last visit a few years back.

Totter - would you care to let us know which holiday destination you think is okay to go to?
I was going to go to London, but because of the Menenez shooting< I have thought twice about it. Obviously, Portugal is out and since Cliff Richard has a place in Barbados, I had better skip there to.
All holiday destination ideas gratefully received.

I don't think there's anywhere in the world that haven't got some kind of social problems. We've been all over (well near enough) & have found some places better than others.
I think it's up to the individual/s to 'personally' experience something not very nice in a country before deciding whether or not to go back - not just because of what they read in the paper, or watch on the telly!

Oneeyedvic,
Firstly I would go to Barbados because as far as I know the police work with the same principals as non Portuguese police and if Sir Cliff Richard has a place there I bet he does not pay the amount of business tax that would sufficiently go towards funding the Barbadian police force than that of Portugal.
Secondly the Menenez case has totally different circumstances that I defiantly dont condone but (suspected terrorist running away from armed police little girl missing) no comparison.
And finally as far as holidays destination ideas are concerned you may want to contact Boo. Apparently Boo had calls from customers asking if her company were offering cheap holidays after 9/11 tragedy (Sick)
P.S. Oneeyedvic, your attempt of sarcasm sucks!
