Rinse and repeat.

Why do shampoo bottles advise us to rinse and repeat? I've never done that yet. Is it a ploy to get us to buy shampoo more often? Or is there a reason why we should do this?
And more importantly - is my hair likely to fall out because I've never done it?

My daughter was told at hairdressing college that it was something to do with the second shampoo lathering better, therefore washing better.I think its a ploy to get us to buy more shampoo. While we're on the subject, why does a same size bottle of conditioner never last as long as the shampoo? I have to buy two conditioner to each shampoo.
I imagine the first dose is to remove dirt, grime and grease and the second dose is to let the magic shampoooey stuff work its..magic. Of course, in doing so, you might run out quicker.
Your hair will only really fall out if you wear a hat or use too much product too often, so I am told. You could however try one of those trivia threads and pull it out instead if so desired.

Asda do shower gel for 20p? Wow!
Well if truth be told Katie, I do buy cheap shampoo for 'everyday' washing of hair, so it could be a ploy by them eh? Will check out my 'special' shampoo after and see what it says- lol.
Hey Daffy- Actually when i think about it, hairdressers do wash your hair twice don't they? Hmmmm......

Depending on how often you shampoo, the first wash can serve to moisturise the scalp and hair follicles. Consequently, your first wash and rinse can often leave ...well...I suppose the best word for it is residue..think of it the way you would with your washing machine. It uses the first wash to remove all the primary bits and bobs, and the second cycle is a bit of a rinse out.
No, you won't lose your hair. Our society tends to be a bit obsessive about these things due to pressure from media and societal judgements.
If you also use conditioners each time, you 'may' find there's an excessive build-up and in that instance, having a couple of good washes, and forgetting about the conditioner for the day could give your hair a bit more bounce and shine.
If you don't like the idea of the second wash, but appreciate the idea of cleaning out any other bits...try mixing 2 parts white vinegar to 4 parts water...it will do the same thing and is great for helping your brush move through your hair afterwards.
Best of luck

Ocatvius is right. But it's down to choice as well. If you dont feel your hair is quite clean, wash again. I had to wash twice with long hair, not with short, so this may explain things. Shampoos are basically about the same (never mind hair wash, a lot of hog wash is involved in selling shampoo) and are inexpensive. So if you do rinse and repeat there are more expensive vices.
There was an interesting article in WHICH magazine about 2 years ago, comparing shampoos. It made some rather powerful statements. I can't remember all of it, but it listed a couple of the Tesco 59 pence shampoos as being better than 'luxury' shampoos. We use a range of Klorane products at home, but I also have a bottle of Alberto Balsam, which gives a jolly good shine to my hair.
