I have a nine yr old daughter who has a lovely voice and sings all the time when she is in the house. I am wondering if I should send her to singing lessons....what could they teach her....I want her to develop her natural talent (she is the only decent singer in family for 2 generations). I have no ambitions to turn her into a professional or popstar ...just curious about the classes and what they might open up....

First of all...a reality check.

Your child isn't really special....every parent thinks this, but the simple fact is your kid is the same as everyone elses.

Now having got that out of the way.....Singing lessons can do a lot or a little......they will teach you how to breath well while singing (not as easy as it sounds) and how to project but they can also force a very proper singing style on some people ruining good natural voices, though this depends on the teacher.....see if her school has a choir and try and promote her though that but don't force her to learn or she may rebel against it.

sft42 thats wel nasty
I thinl SFT is correct is as much as it may be best to go through the school first but I think your kid i really special, they all are. Does she want singing lessons is the most important thing I would have thought. If so, then hey why not..
i don't know where you live but there is an organisation called the voices foundation who some times operate in schools - its not terrible 'pop idol' stuff, just developing vocal techniques etc in a choir. IMHO individual coaching shoud poss be avoided at her age, but singing her head off in a group has lots of social/confidence benefits.... http://www.voices.org.uk/ p.s. good for her that she has a way of expressing herself - and good for you for giving her the opportunity to develop it
p.s. - the p.s isn't part of the link :)
I'd say that your daughter probably is gifted. I come from an exceptionally musically gifted family, but must definitely have been behind the door for this one. Get her into something like a choir or drama group to start with.
