Trouble was it smelled rank. They did a great nail varnish called Rock-On Plum, very daring in those days to have purple nail varnish. And I remember the Lentheric perfumes, Tweed, Panache, Just Musk and another one I have forgotten. And we musn't forget Charlie.
Oh this takes me back. I remember the Avon, mainly the cream perfumes in fancy jars...topaze, wishing, here's my heart (yuk!). There were lots of stick foundations & blushers I seem to recall, heaven knows what we looked like, & a trend for drawing in 'false eyelashes' under your lower eyelid & a black line in your eye socket but I never did that. (I've got some old copies of Honey magazine somewhere, will have a flick through & see what the ads were for). Oh yes - the hight of sophistication - Youth Dew by Estee Lauder...it was soooo strong!
wasn't that the era of the "great smell of Brut"? very trendy for young ladies to wear, not just blokes. Also I remember Goya "Aqua Manda", spicy orange scent in brown bottles with a flat top. Then they introduced Aqua citra (lemon) but never so popular. My mum used to wear Lentheric's TWEED, very evocative scent.
Hairspray - Harmony or Silvikrin - you just HAD to wear it to keep your flick in place, and look like Farrah Fawcett. The problem was that it gave your hair the texture of glued-together cardboard, and every time the wind blew the whole flick would move at once, we really were sophisticated. And I bet you all bought your grandmas bath cubes and talcum powder gift sets for Christmas - probably Sandalwood scented. I wonder if people still use talcum powder? Aqua Manda, that takes me back.........
