Why do doctors/nurses ask men to cough when they're fiddling their nether regions? What are they doing down there and why 'cough'?

checking for a hernia the cough pushes the intesin through the abdominal wall a bit more making detection of small hernia easier (you would be able to see a large one)

oh yeah the docs mess around "down stairs" because hernias can develop around the groin as well as the naval region
