Contact Lenses.
17 Answers
I've just started using contact lenses today, and it feels so alien and uncomfortable. How long does it take to get used to using them?
I have great difficulty in putting them on my lens, i can't help blinking. I have no problem touching my eye, i just seem to blink at the wrong time.

I know if I have put them in correctly (I wear daily disposables) as it feels "normal" but often feel uncomfortable with them. They do make your eyes dry, so get some eye drops (suitable for contacts) and they do make your eyes feel more comfortable

sorry dabees woffled on then withoutrealising!
ts just practice i'm afraid. I always had to use a mirror, altho wasn't actually looking in it as such.
Try holding both your eyelids open with one hand, have the lens on your index or middle finger of the other hand. As you get closer to your eye, try looking up so your not actually looking at the lens going in which tends to make you blink more. The lens will still "stick" to your eye. As you look back straight ahead the lens will adjust into position.
Hope this makes sense. Let me know how you get on. x

Hi dabees, getting used to putting lenses in and taking them out again is probably the hardest part but will get easier and easier. When I first started wearing lenses, it could sometimes take me half an hour to get them in. Soon though that went down to being able to do it in just a few minutes. I would hold my top eyelid with a couple of fingers on my left hand, hold the bottom lid with my ring finger on my right hand and have the lens on my middle finger on my right hand ready to put in.
Keep persevering with it and you will get the hang of it in no time.

Thanks Petal for your answer, but i feel very comfortable when they are in, i just have a problem putting them in.
I have no issues with my eyes, I can comfortably put my finger on my eye.
My eldest is blind in his left eye, so i know all about eyes. I just can't help blinking when i try to put them in.
Why?

hardest bit I find is getting them in, without using my glasses! lol... Ivy has the right explanation though.
I also just wear a contact in one eye, as I am long sighted, but being the vain person that I am, prefer to wear a lense rather than glasses for work.
Sometimes I put the lense in, and its so bloody uncomfortable, I know I have put it in wrong. So give up and wear my specs

I have those contact lenses that you wear for a month solid. #ANyhow I got them mixed up and put them in the wrong eyes (different prescriptions). I have had them like this for 2 weeks now as Im too lazy to swap them over. My mate got an eye ulcer from overwearing contact lenses in Cambodia and the doctor just gave him pain killers!
Hope this helps

I used to have problems putting them in but i've found a way now of doing it that is almost foolproof
Put the lense on the first or second finger or whichever hand you write with and stand close to a wall mirror.
Hold your eye open with a finger and thumb of your other hand and look into the inside corner of your eye.
Place the lens on the white of your eye, as close to the iris as you can bear (I can't touch the iris itself as it makes me blink!)
When it is secure on the white, still holding your eye open so you can't blink, turn your eye to 'look into' the lens and it will attach itself to your iris!
It took me a couple of weeks to get used to putting them in as well but now it's no problem!

I found a video which may help you dabees.

You will get used to fitting them and wearing them.
Blinking will become less the more practice you have.
I occasionally wear the daily disposable lens. Hated them at first but now I think they're great. No hassle with solutions.
Just make sure your hands are washed and clean before fitting the lens.
Good luck.

ye tht s great advice about not puttin them directly on ur iris but then lookin towards it. The more u put them in the more u get used to them! I spent over an hour the first time in the opticians like u, but now takes less than a minute to have both in! And i dont even notice their in all day really! Persevere!
When I first got mine, I used a mirror to put them in. I don't know whether it was 'seeing' where I was putting them, or whether concentrating on looking into the mirror made me blink less but it worked!
Also, use Saline, and squirt a bit in the lens before you put it in, it might help the lens rest on your eye and push out any dust you may have on the lens/eye.
Other than that, it's just practise I'm afraid. I've had mine since I was 15 and was fearless when I got them, so it could be that you're worried you'll get in a flap, and so you do?
Good Luck!

Also, I assume you do hold your eye lids open?
