Mole concern
5 Answers
I have a mole on the top of my shoulder, and when I was scratching an itch near the mole, my hand slipped and my nails almost tore the mole off. It is still hanging there, but just barely. Am I in any potential danger from this and do I need to contact a doctor?

I'd detach it completely and see what happens (if it leaves an open wound, disinfect and dress it appropriately). It does sound like DIY surgery, but you may have accidentally rid yourself of it.
If you are worried about whether it was potentially cancerous or not you should go to the doctor anyway. You could try ringing NHS Direct first - they should be able to put your mind at rest for now.
My son had a mole on his neck which he used to pick at when he was little and often took it right off. It always came back looking exactly the same. Eventually he had it removed because it rubbed under his shirt collar and the surgical procedure to remove a mole also means taking quite a lot of flesh from around and under it as well and several stiches. It was a perfectly benign mole, as most are, and yours will mostprobably be absolutely fine. However, if a mole changes without interference it must be investigated. Personally, I would seek medical advice, especially as it is just hanging there!
