Is it as painful as it sounds? And how long do you think hairs have to be for to to work?

I think professional waxing of that area would be less painful, as it is a small area to do and it's done very quickly. The hairs need to be at least 4-5 mm long for effective wax removal.
Now if you try having a Hollywood or Brazilian wax, that is just indescribable pain.

Awww meglet - it's agonising, hun!!!! Then again, I find leg waxes uncomfortable as well. The removal by sugaring method seems slightly better - but it's all one and the same thing really. If you get some tweezers and pull an underarm hair out, it'll give you some idea - except that waxing's quicker - but it's not good at all. Am I a wimp???? Lol.
I converted to an epilator from wax about 2 years ago- you can get rid of much shorter hair so no waiting for a bush of regrowth, and i actually found it less painful as i was in control of how fast or how much i did. Much easier to stop half way for a break than waxing!
If i do it regularly, it hurts much less- found a week is how long to get visible regrowth, at a push could leave it 10 days before it needs doing. As opposed to every 3 days shaving.
My top tips to minimise discomfort.
Always have a hot bath or shower first to soften the follicles. If you really cant, then soak a flannel in rather hot water and apply to your underarms, then dry them thoroughly and start.
Also, take a pain killer 30-45 mins before you begin, if you have a low pain threshhold, you could get some topical analgesic ( i.e something you rub on)and put it on first
good luck

I agree with that, lady_p_gold, but it's an expensive treatment, and can cause red patchy skin on sensitive areas. Plus, it doesn't always work straight away, and subsequent treatments are needed. My friend had both legs done in that way. It worked a treat - and cost a fortune, as only small areas could be done at once.
