nits (again and again and again!)

Any help would be gratefully received.

My little girl (aged 10) had corn rows and extensions put in only 2 weeks ago. It was an expensive job, it looks smart, she loves it and so do I. However, she has come home from school in past 2 - 3 days with nits (clearly from another child as they are big and she was clean when she had her hair done - the hairdresser assured me of that) No eggs or anything.

Is there any possible way without my having to take the extensions out of the cornrows and plaits so I can comb through it to remove the nits.

i.e. Is there anything I can buy that would kill the nits for a couple of weeks until she has it done again.

i think you should remove the false braids.
i had them when i was a child and mum applied kerosene to my head, then after a couple shampoos they were all gone.

the petrol depot sold it when i was a kid. i think she also bought a lamp and it came with the lamp. it is flammable so you may think twice about using it. but it worked magic on my head. i used to have it a lot.

i'm sure in these modern times there's something you could get at your chemist to help. i think a poster by the name of ice.maiden posted a remedy for ridding lice. look back in old posts you might find it, or if she comes on later and sees your post she might post it again. good luck.

Hi Cado. Conditioner with pure tea tree oil and a great nit zapper comb is what I normally use but if you can imagine she has this MASS of thick ringlets for hair (beautiful). However, I treated her to the braids and extensions in London not two weeks ago and it just seems a shame if I have to undo them. I am not bothered about the cost it would just be nice for her if we could leave them in for a little while longer and get rid of the little blighters but obviously her health is more important.

Just wondered if anyone could recommend anything without the combing.

I found a recipe in a herb book for an oil to dress hair with supposedly it repels the little blighters! You use four different essential oils in a carrier oil to make it. but I haven't got the book handy, might be worth a 'net' search. Let me know if you have no luck & I'll just have to unpack the last few boxes! lol, I moved just over a year ago!

what is kerosene . what you trying to do set her on fire !!!!!!
go to the chemists and have a word with the pharmacist .
the thing is you will get rid of them but she can catch them again from other children at the school if there head is not clean.

ps to my last message ther is a newish one on the market that does not have a bad smell it may be best if all the family use it as nits spread very quickly. best of luck

'Hedrin' is a product I've used quite alot on my daughter lately. I'm fed up with her coming home with headlice. It actually suffocates the lice without using harmful chemicals on your child. I was told, by the pharmacist at boots, that I could use this without worrying about any effect on my child. But, unfortunately, because this, or anything kills the nits(eggs) that combing through is the only sort of pretentative way of making sure the little sods don't come back.
Mind you, saying that, if you treat your kids hair and someone who they play with doesn't have their hair treated, they are always going to be proned to gettig them.

Just read a detailed report on nits in one of the papers. The only foolproof way is to take out the extensions, lather the hair with conditioner, get a magnifying lens, a nit comb and a pair of tweezers. Do this everynight for 2 weeks ie, pick and comb out the eggs! Yuk! It said that lice are 80% immune to the chemicals in lice killer now, so they can't be relied upon.

All you need to do, is buy from the Chemists so Coconut Spray, this makes the hair slippery, the little blighters can't grip, and fall off.

You'd need to comb out any eggs there may be, but for the adults, that spray is all you'd need.

Sorry for the delay but I'm back, with the recipe, hurrah! It comes from a book by Maggie Tisserand (famous name essential oil supplier) called 'Aromatherapy for Women' & is repeated in my book called 'The Complete Book of Herbs' by Lesley Bremness.
This is the recipe of essential oils which eliminates lice & leaves the hair lustrous & shining.
25 drops of rosemary oil.
25 drops of lavender oil.
13 drops of geranium (pelargonium) oil.
12 drops of eucalyptus oil.
in 3 fl.oz (75 ml) vegetable oil, i.e. olive oil.
Divide hair into small sections & saturate down to the roots. Pile hair on top of head & wrap plastic around the head & behind the ears to stop the oils from evaporating - careful, don't let the little darlings suffocate! Leave on for 2 hours.
Remove plastic, add shampoo & rub in well, rinse thoroughly.
Now the instructions say 'comb through with a fine nit comb' but as the lice are dead this is only a cosmetic step, so I think you can safely miss it out.
Repeat three days later or every 3 days as she is constantly being re-infected.
Also, ask the school/s to send a letter home to every parent/ saying that there is a headlice problem & everyone should treat with - add the name of the locally suggested product is. Add that low income families get it on free prescription or (cheap) nit comb wet hair, using loads of cheap conditioner, daily for about 10-14 days. This is best sent the week before a holiday so everyone can treat over the holiday & hopefully all return to school lice free. Especially improtant for families who have children at different (schools.

By the way 'kerosene' is what we call 'parraffin' & used to be used in greenhouse heaters, some people also used it for heating their home but it was quite smelly & dangerous & has fallen out of widespread use in favour of calor gas & thermostatically
