nits!!!!!!

Help it's back to school time and the dreaded nits have come back again, this time on me!!! I have never had them in my life, my scalp is itching like mad any ideas on how to get rid of the little bleeders? My kids are clear thank god, but I am wondering if the visit from my nephews and niece on Sunday is the answer, maybe they forgot to take everything home?

I was going to go for a haircut tomorrow but to embarrassed now!

go to the health centre and they shouold give you some stuff free they used to, no nead for a haircut, or buy that stuff over the counter, it's not dear, you might get it tonight if there is a late sainsburys with a pharmacy hear you, or i think tescos sell it.

My daughter used to get them all the time....we tried all the lotions and potions, conditioners, tea tree oil etc etc and none were any good at all.

But we did try something called prioderm (got it in boots i think) and she hasn't had a nit since......and that was a year ago !!!

Don't be embarrassed Spurslady as this is a common problem the length and breadth of the country and head lice are not discriminatory. Anyone can catch them and even celebrities such as Melinda Messenger and Jonathon Ross have admitted that they caught them too. The fallacy that they are attracted to a dirty head has long since been dismissed but even although we now know that they are actually more inclined to go to a clean head , the stigma remains.

At my eldest daughter's previous school , this problem raged on in one particular class (my daughter's) where children never seemed to be really free of them. It later emerged that one or two parents were only whacking on the treatment but not combing properly , therefore the nits hatched again and the problem continued. The most important part to remember is effective combing. In order to be free of head lice , you must remove all of the live lice and eggs to prevent reinfestation. You do not have to use harsh chemical solutions and in fact can buy clean and clear which is a shampoo for frequent use if it is an ongoing problem. It is worth also noting that you should not use chemical solutions for repeated use as it is a pesticide which will destroy your hair and the head lice will build up an immunity to it , rendering it ineffective anyway.

You can also use the cost free solution of combing them out with conditioner. You have to soak the hair in conditioner and comb them out , washing the comb after every strand. The conditioner is too slippy for the lice to stick to and they will come away but you must do this every day for a period of two weeks.

Don't be ashamed though because at least you want to do something to get rid of them. The only ones who need be ashamed are the ones who are too lazy to acknowledge or treatr the problem. So if you have treated them , then no reason why you can't go and get your hair cut. Hope this helps x

Great posting enigma - they are nothing to be embarrassed about ( although it may feel like it) . Live on clean people, not dirty.
Conditioner is the answer - and your hairdressers will be well used to this problem, I am sure.

Isn't it funny though Larkin that we can talk about it openly on here but wouldn't be as forthcoming to the other parents ? It's a common problem which as you quite rightly say , most parents of school aged children can relate to and yet it is still a source of embarrassment and I defy anyone to openly discuss it with other parents. I know that I for one wouldn't in case I got the finger pointed at me as the source of the problem. All it takes is for one parent not to bother treating their child , or not to do it properly and the problem rages on and you can't stop kids from being in close contact with each other so it can be tricky if you can't pinpoint the source of a recurrent problem. They are horrible little things too but it's just one of those things.

Youve got some good adice on how to get rid of the, but if you buy a coconut spray from the chemists, the little darlings can't get a grip on the hair, and fall off.

My daughter goes to a special needs centre, and used to get them all the time, using this spray, she's been clear for a couple of years now.

well there is lotions that u can buy at any chemists but some of them are not effective ive heard that if u use tea tree shampoo and conditioner that is meant to keep them away .hope this is any help love laura
