has anybody had a detached retina???
9 Answers
as i mentioned last night on CB i have suffered from a detached retina and had to have operation that involved having my left eye clamped and my right eye lazered...
thankfully i had a brilliant consultant and i owe having my eyesight back fully... to him. anyway i would love to know if you or somebody you know has had lazer treatment for short sighted and if it was successful!!! i know a lot of surgeons wouldn't entertain me after having the operation but i know if the price is right then there must be somebody specially qualified to do the treatment!!! would really appreciate any advice on this as i am dubious but excited to have this done.
thanks in advance xxx

I have not had a detached retina but a similar condition, a PVD, where the inside of the eye pulls away from the retina. You are fortunate that your detached retina could be lasered back on - mine is not treatable with current technology.
To answer your query properly you need to find out why the detachment happened - was it trauma? extreme shortsightedness / eyeball changing shape?
Laser treatment is at present only successful for certain types of eyesight, and extreme shortsightedness puts you out of the frame.
The other thing to consider is that laser treatment can only be temporary even if successful as your eyes change over time, lasered or not.
A new procedure involves replacing the lens of the eye with an 'intra-ocular device' ie a bionic lens. If you are interested in this a specialist with a good international reputation is Arthur Nylander at Royal Blackburn Hospital who also has a private clinic in Manchester.
He offered me this new procedure on NHS but I chickened out, and find I am happy at present with soft contact lenses alternating with specs.

people just dont realise how lucky they are to have perfect vision and i do realize im extremely lucky to have my full eyesight back... sorry for lil that her eyesight couldn't be restored.... but i hate wearing contact lenses every frigging day and suffer from dry eyes so it costs me a fortune to have more expensive lenses that are comfortable for me to wear!!

Awwww hun....I can well imagine how inconvenient it is - not to mention expensive as well. I think you need expert advice, as to whether laser treatment'd be of any use to you. My MiL's eyesight was getting terrible before her ops - even with glasses. It was only going to get worse, so she decided to see if something could be done. The treatment's postponed the worsening of her sight, but as I said, she still needs her glasses for reading and driving.
