I just found out I stopped a suicidal person from killing himself last summer.
I didn't know he was suicidal at the time, he just told me a few days ago.

How can you be sure this is not some unstable attention/sympathy seeking? I dont mean to cloud any aspect of your post, but my senses would tell me to be very wary.

Yes and you being there will help him, and you seem such a lovely person, but if he has told you that your postcard stopped him taking his own life then I would have to say you dont have any worry about him doing it. From my experience people that kill themselves very rarely tell a person they are going to.
