After a routine trip to the salon for my usual highlights, they came out brassy and orangey-yellow looking. I absolutely hate this shade against my olive complection and against my dark brown hair. What can I do to get rid of it??? (preferably on my own)

Go back to the shop and make the stylist or colourist do a proper job. This is your consumer right as you've paid for it - and it's not a cheap process! I had to do this recently, and now I'm pleased I plucked up the courage to have it put right. In the meantime there are quite a few home remedies - mayonnaise is supposed to remove the brassiness, but I prefer to have something like a Silver mousse as a toner. Good Luck!
I say go back to the salon too, my friend had her scalp burnt by the bleach they put in her hair last weekend and she went straight back (she hated the hair colour and cut too!). Even though it was our friend who coloured it! Don't be afraid to complain, you aren't putting people out by doing it, people do it all the time. In the meantime washing up liquid used in place of shampoo will dull the colour down drastically (give it a good week or so to work) as it strips the colour out of your hair and lemon juice also (although you shouldn't use too much of this because it can also bleach your hair blonde).
