Garden Moles

I was wondering if anyone here has ever used one of those sonic mole repellers that you stake into the ground? If so, would you recommend one or was it a waste of time and money?

My mother is driving me mad complaining about moles destroying her small garden and neither of us really know how to deal with the problem. I did a bit of research and came across a solar powered sonic device which is meant to drive them away.

Is it worth me buying one of these repellers for her so that we can deal with the moles humanely? I've seen those scissor traps, but they are barbaric and definitely not an option.

Those little windmills on sticks that you can buy for children at the seaside work just as well. Two or three stuck in mole hills around the garden will do the trick. The moles don't like the vibration, so go elsewhere - and no harm done.

my dad used to stand on the wall for hours with a spade watching the mole hills. When one started to move he'd jump on it and stun the mole. Then while it was stunned he'd dig it up and let them go in the woods. He caught a good few but it took him hours and hours so I would go with the windmill if I was you :)

Thank you naomi24, that sounds like a good idea. Don't know where I'm likely to find windmills though as I'm nowhere near any seaside towns. Maybe a garden centre might have some?

Beanmistriss, that did make me laugh! I can just picture my mum playing 'whack attack' on the lawn with a spade! She just wants rid of them but I'd rather it was done humanely.

So it seems that something that vibrates in the ground will do the trick then.

Thanks IAP. My mum has insisted that I buy her that sonic pole thingummyjig, but I will definitely suggest the Jeyes Fluid method to her. I'm not surprised that moles don't like the smell of it, it's flippin' awful!

They may be nearly deaf and so not hear the sound made by that pole thingy, but the sound unit causes the pole to vibrate. In theory they should feel the vibration, which allegedly makes the mole/s uncomfortable enough to move on. Oh well, I've paid for the device now.

If we use a combination of that AND the Jeyes Fluid, that, hopefully, should have some effect. My mum's little garden is surrounded by a field that belongs to the house next door. It may encourage moley to migrate over there, but then again, I'm thinking that you're right IAP, more will probably just come along from the field to take it's/their place. Looks like this may well become an ongoing problem. Grrrr!

In A Pickle, how odd. Windmills work in our garden - which is also a very large country plot - but since Aprilis has already bought the sonic device it's irrelevant anyway. I don't like the thought of hurting the moles, so I hope it works, Aprilis. Good luck.

I can't vouch for mole repelling but the sonic rat & mouse repeller we bought works. It has prevented any of the mice the cats bring in from setting up home & seems to make them so uncomfortable that the cats are able to recapture & despatch them within a few days. Don't see why it wouldn't work on moles - the mice don't hear it, but sense it anyway. It's supposed to make them twitchy & uncomfortable in their skin......Good luck & let us know!
