A friend who's father died 20 years ago would like a copy of the postmortem, is this possible? If so where would he apply to?

Was there an inquest? if so prehaps the courts would be a place to start. or even ring up the coroners office in the area where the dad died and ask them
Hi there. If there's no known illness or apparent reason for death, then there will be an inquest to establish the cause of death. You might find it difficult to get copies of any official documents before this happens, especially if you're not Next of Kin, and under those circumstances the death certificate is unlikely to give much information, but the coroner's office will be able to advise. Good luck.
Oh **IT. So SORRY - just read your question properly !!!
But, yes - there will have been an inquest. You can get a copy of the death cert. from the Registry, but I have a feeling coroner's offices only keep records of PMs a certain number of years - probably not 20. But, still worth chatting to the coroner's office to check.
