Pssst! Quiet now and don't tell anyone... but they're already there.

Most likely on international flights but also on seleceted domestic flights.

Having been a commercial pilot for many years I can tell you they are always identified to the flight crew, but noone else. They began right after 9/11 here in the U.S., in earnest, athough they had been used prior to that. Almost every country has our equivalent of Air Marshals. But... unless their very specialized services are required, you'll never know one is setting next to you in 14 C..
Have a nice flight!
Yep they already have them, obviously not in uniform, but the airlines do pay for a police presence onboard.
Wow I neve knew that but I'm very glad I do now :)

I always thought one idea with the advert of terrorism and post 9/11 would be to have a system where in an emergency, the pilots were locked in a cabin sealed from the rest of the plan and some harmles gas was released in the main bit to put everyone to sleep until the plane is dafely landed and the trouble dealt with.

A bit drastic in most cases but could work in the case of terrorist or hostage situations though they'd probably ruddy get them in as pilots :(
