I had to have a blood test this morning. Just took the plaster off and the whole of the inside of my elbow is a bloody black mess (about 1 x 2 inches). I've cleaned it up, but this is clearly under the skin. Is this normal?

yes
Unfortunately its a bruise. It probable that pressure wasn't applied for long enough or fim enough after the blood was taken (usually needs 1 - 2 minutes).
Also, if you are taking aspirin/warfarin - pressure would need to be applied longer.
If you bruise easily anyway, you will be more likely to bruise after venepuncture - try keeping the pressure firm and elevate your arm if you have to have another more taken in future.

Doesn't sound like it warrants sick note tho.....lol!!

ouch I have had a few of them!

Thanks Lynne.

I am not on any medication and don't bruise easily - it was just a bit of a shock when I took the plaster off!

I am gutted at the fact that I won't be able to take a fortnight off though!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
had my blood tested last week and as usual elevated my arm. the nurse told me put it down again as they have discovered this causes the bruising.they seem to change the rules every few weeks.
Ouch!

I always find it quite random. I bruise very easily and have my bloods done every 2 weeks.

The same nurse does it most of the time and sometimes it bruises sometimes it doesn't.

I haven't had a blood test for years, and this has ever happened! Oh well, it doesn't hurt, just looks bloody awful. Shame I can't justify a few days with my feet up moaning that I am terribly sick!!!!

Seriously though, it was part of a batch of tests because I had a lumpy boob problem, which looks like it will be nothing!
