Bleeding While Pregnant
9 Answers
Help please!!
My wife is around 9 weeks pregnant when she started to to get some spotting. The next day, the bleeding got heavier, at which point we attended A+E. They performed a scan, where they could see a sack which was only 4 to 5 weeks large. We were infromed that everything looked normal, and there was nothing to suggest from the scan that miscarriage was taking place.
They have booked us for another scan in a few weeks, to see if there is a heart beat, as it is to early on in the pregnancy to tell if everything is healthy. Since the first scan, she has continued to bleed on and off for the past week, some heavy, and some spotting, and am getting more inpatient as to what is happening, as we have another 2 weeks until the scan.
Is my wife miscarrying, or is there a chance that we will see a heart beat in 2 weeks?
We are both just thinking the worst as you do.

Spotting isn't that unusual during pregnancy and can cause a great deal of anxiety. I spotted during early pregnancy and was fine.
Obviously, as you are aware, it can be a sign that a miscarriage is taking place. I know 2 weeks seems like a ridiculously long time, but those extra 2 weeks will make the world of difference when she is scanned again, as they will be looking for growth and the foetal heartbeat.
I hope all goes well.

I had a very early scan for the same reason. I wish I could remember how early.. I'm sure I was only 6-8 weeks, and the heartbeat could be seen. I think you should check to see if they can do a scan sooner, just for your peace of mind.
there are lots of reasons for bleeding in pregnancy, but they don't all lead to miscarriage. I have 2 kids to prove it, and bled in both pregnancies.
I hope all is well x

Hi x Im so sorry to hear about your wife having this bleeding. I was just wondering are you sure she is 9 weeks pregnant? If she is definately 9 weeks then the baby would be 7 weeks gestation, the heart begins to beat at aprox 6 weeks gestation, so should be visable easily at a 9 weeks pregnancy scan.
I have alot of experience working within gynae wards, which deal with pregnancies up to 20 weeks, most hospitals have early pregnancy assesment units, you could try calling the hospital and find out if yours has one, and ask to speak to them.
If you are really concerned then they should see you.
On a personal level, i had 1 scan at 7 weeks, a transvaginal scan which showed my baby at 2mm, and a heartbeat.
Please go back to your gp asap if your wife is in pain or bleeding heavily, she will be distressed and your gp cant ignore that.
But do try and call the hospital to see if they have an early pregnancy assessment unit as you can just go along to be seen, usually with no appointment.
Good luck, and i hope that everything is alright, please keep us updated xx Bless xx

Hi i'm 24 with 3 children my 1st and 3rd pregnancies were fine. I was pregnant before my first child but that resulted in misscarraige if your wife is going through one then you'd know there's no doubt about it. It is very painful. With my 2nd child i started bleeding quite bad but had NO pain obviously my first thought was oh my god i'm misscarrying again i got my friends dad to take me to hospital where they did blood tests and did a scan everything was fine with baby the problem???? i had a placenta abrupture!!!!! nothing major really and just had to rest....I too was only early on!!!
I hope everything goes well and you have a right to know asap what is happening with your baby.
Good Luck

hi there, i had irregular bleeding throughout the first three months of my pregnancy so i do know how scary it is when it happens, so my thoughts are with you on that. I was told that bleeding is common however i still wanted it checked out for piece of mind so i contacted the early pregnacy unit of my local hospital and they fitted me within 24 hours. As your wife is very early into her pregnancy and the scan showed nothing to suggest that a miscarriage is taking place i think you just need to take there word for it at the moment im afraid. I know 2 weeks seems a lifetime away but you will be suprised by how much more they will be able to tell you about your baby by then.
I had early bleeding too with my daughter (now 5!), apparently it was caused by what would have been a twin pregnancy, just an empty sack next to my daughter. Its really horrible not knowing whats going on, but I would definately take a trip to the early pregnancy unit for another scan, 2 weeks is a long time when your so worried. Hope it all goes well. x
