blood in poo
16 Answers
my younger brother has had blood in his poo for about, he says, 2 years (why he's left it this long i don't know) and recently mentioned it to me, i have made an appointment at our doctors but he's now saying he does not want to go...he's only 20yrs old and i am extremely worried, i know it could be anything from piles to cancer, i would be grateful if anyone could advise on anything else it could be...?? he says it hurts sometimes when he goes for a poo but does not feel constipated, the blood is bright red and is sometimes on the paper when he wipes himself

I would sit him down (on a cussion) and persuade him to go to the doctors. Better still if you know what to look for why not get a rubber glove, a bit of KY jelly and have a rumage around yourself? In all seriousnes though this did happen to me once and it was because I was using too much nasal decongestant (which goes to show how evil that stuff is). Get him to the quacks.
My dad also had blood coming out and he left it for too long until he found out that it was colon cancer. Unfortunately it spread, and although he is still alive, he is not doing well.
I dont mean to scare you, its unlikely that at his age he will have cancer, but you never know. Best not to be in doubt and have it checked out by a doctor (and get a second opinion) to rule out any life threatening thing

I had this recently and also left it a few years as i was embarrased. i went to the doc and yes she had to have a quick look, nothing major tho, and it was an anal fissure, a small tear in the skin. this causes great pain when passing poo, like glass being pooed out!, and also fresh blood on the toilet paper. whereas i think cancerous blood is more in the poo itslef.
a simple cream did the trick, i find it comes back when i eat rubbish.
make him go and let us know wot it was

Most GP surgeries or clinics have a regular 'bum clinic' (Their words not mine!) A simple sigmoidoscopy will give the answers straight away. If it is anything further 'up' The earlier it is checked the better. I know the subject is taboo for some, but tell him not to 'die of embarrasment!' - this will kick him into gear and take way a lot of worry for you all!
