Hair dye help?

My sister wanted to dye her hair a dark shade of blonde (she was dark brown before), so i stripped the colour and put highlights through it. It's a copper red/brown colour, with lighter hightlights. I was going to leave it a few weeks to get it in better condition, then go lighter gradually. BUT... she has a prom this month and wanted to dye it darker, but not permanently. So, i put a wash out dye over it, but it didnt take to the lighter parts. Why is this? And is there any dark wash out dye that will take to the highlights? I dont want to put a dark permanent dye on it as the lightening of the hair would have been a waste of time. Any advice?

Highlighted hair, being extra porous will grab any color. I suggest you use a mousse in the shade she wants. It will shampoo out.

I wouldn't normally say this but get salon advice, may be pricey but you have to realise you're dealing with potentially dangerous chamicals here. You don't want to cause problems or give her scalp burn etc

Also without seeing her and knowing the exact products used its impossble to advise correctly.

It's a shame you reversed course and went darker again - I went from medium brown to light ash blonde by myself at home too. I simply picked the lightest blonde I could find initially and then when it went to the copper/red stage I switched to Ash blondes to get the red/brassy out. Admittedly, I was very impatient and managed to change in a two week period! I had highlights and lowlights in the brown and those left me with a really cool streaked blonde look at first. I was light ash blonde for the last year and then recently changed to ultra light ash blonde. I really like the colour and since I just do my roots each month and pull the colour through to the ends for the last 5-10 minutes, the condition is good.
