Your toes are there to give you balance and I think that a thumb could be used to replace a missing toe, as you wouldn't be able to walk

If you will notice, when completing a stride, one "pushes off" using the big toe.  You could learn to walk without it, but the stride would not be the same as before and not nearly as efficient...

A man lived in the same street as me when I was younger who lost a big toe, when he dropped a paving slab on it, and I used to see him walking up and down the street with walking sticks learning to walk again.

I broke my little toe and couldn't walk properly so I think you probably need all your toes otherwise why have 5

I'm so sorry - but I have been creasing up at some of the replies, especially the paving slab one! I really do sympathise though, as I have stubbed my big toe so many times on the wheels of our bed, especially in the dead of night when I'm getting out for a wee!

My old primary school teacher chopped his big toe off with a flymo.  He had to learn to walk again because of the balance problem.  He would show the stump to the boys after swimming lessons if we behaved!
