Broken finger

2 wks ago i badly broke my right hand ring finger. I went to A&E where an Orthopedic Surgeon was called to look at it, he told me that i would need surgery so it could be wired/pinned or plated because of the nature of the break (straight across where a ring would sit) I was booked in for surgery the next day but when the surgeons came round on the morning they said upon closer inspection of the xray they noticed id had a cyst on the bone that had burst when it broke n therefore couldnt pin/plate it as it had left a hole which in time would fill with bone n that they would pot it for the time being. I now have a cast on up to my elbow which comes off in a wks time. My finger is still extremely sore and looks out of shape (that cud be the positioning of the cast though) but does anyone know what the chances of this healing correctly without surgery are. Sorry this is a bit long :-)

I think that sounds pretty normal alison, a broken finger will be painfull for a while and it is difficult to imobilise it totally. I guess that they will have a better idea when the cast comes off. I broke my finger on a trolley in Sainsburys about a year ago - very painful - probably more so because I didn't go and get it looked at until 2 weeks later when the swelling went down and I could see how crooked it was - they just splinted it and it has healed okay considering. I carried on and finished my shopping with my hand buried in a bag of frozen peas! History repeats itself though, I fell a couple of weeks ago and still had a lot of pain on the top of my foot - found out yesterday I had chipped the bone and again, I have just had to leave it to its own devices because I didn't do anything about it at the time.

Oh thank you Annie for that, greatly appreciated, n sorry to hear bout your foot. I just cant believe the inconvenience a broken can cause, i will be off work a min of 6wks n desperately do not want them to operates, here keeping them crossed lol :-)

alison......bottom line is what is the cyst?

I know nothing at all about you, but if you have a degree of arthritis, then that may be the cause of the cyst. There are many other causes of a cyst in the little finger, almost all benign in nature.

The chances of healing without further srgery will be dependant on the nature of the cyst and this MAY mean biopsy at some stage.
