Hello Everyone.  I am getting my tongue pierced and am not overly bothered about the initial pain (well maybe a little!) from the needle.  However, I am a little worried about how sore my tongue will be after and not being able to eat!  I am having it done next Satruday morning and am returning to work on Tuesday.  Do you think my tongue will still be swollen.  I also work in a bar part time and have to work on the Saturday night.  Will I be able to talk ok, will it be obvious that I have a swollen tongue??  Many thanks and please can I have serious answer as I know a lot of you hate the thought of piercings, but it is my personal choice!!

Sorry bout that last post pressed tab and off it went grrrr!

Anyway as i was saying i was thinking about getting my done as my friend said she would get me it for xmas...i am alittle doubious as i have only had my ears done before and i had loads of problems with them when they were first done for about 2 years(was a nightmare) they still occasionally go abit funny if i wear cheap earrings unless i only wear them for a few hours(strange i know)so i just don't know what to do but i think it loooks really cool and i'm sure the bf would love it! Well i know he would lol.....

Ahhhh i'm so confused now

I would like to know the opinion of the medical profession about the wisdom of punching a hole through one of the major muscles in the body.  Our tongue is so important to us why would we want to potentially cause damage to it?  I am not criticising at all, I just am really intrigued.

I also feel the same about nipple piercing, especially in women who are likely to want to breast feed at some time in their lives.

Y'know Fakeplastic, I dunno if anyone here will be able to give you a definitive answer as to why they want it done, it's just...cool! The paralysis zgma refers to is caused by piercers who don't know what they are doing piercing through the veins. Any professional piercer will take a good look at the placement of your veins before they go ahead. It is true that it can damage your teeth, mine are fine so far...CHOPS 'R' US, your bf will definitely like it!

Thanks so much for all the positive sensible answers on here.  I am still feeling really nervous about getting it done but I am also very excited.  My biggest worry now though is working on the night I get it done.  It is going to be the worst!
Here's a positive sensible answer. Even the most experienced professional can make a mistake. I could tell you a story about a tongue piercing, but the AB Editor would ban it. It could happen to anyone at the best clinic. Imagine having to live without your tongue.
How is that a nice positive answer Merlin.  If you haven't got anything worthwhile to say to my question, why bother???

I didn't say it was a nice answer.

You must know by now, having properly considered all the pros and cons, whether you are going to make a hole in your body where there shouldn't be one.

Here's another thought for you. Remembrance day has recently commemorated the sacrifice that millions of people made in order that we should be free. Some of those people were tortured in prison camps by having their bodies pierced with various instruments. So people died in agony having their bodies pierced so that you could choose to have it done just for fun.

It's your choice.

Wow Merlin, you must be really against piercing!  I've never thought of my tongue (and other) piercings in relation to the world wars and I'm willing to bet that nobody else on here has either.

You are right Merlin, it is my choice.  I asked for answers to my question, I didn't ask for someone to preach to me about a decision I have already made.

Vittel - i didn't damage the enamel on my teeth at all with either my tongue or my lip piercing. I heard that the reason people damage their teeth is because the bar is too long. if you have the right size bar then it should not touch your teeth easily. i think a lot of people keep in the same bar that they are peirced with and this is oversized to allow for swelling. you should go back after the swelling has gone down and get the correct size. Most places will even change it over for you if you don't feel confident enough.

Hey i had my tongue pierced in september last year. It didn't hurt AT ALL. You can feel it going through but there is absolutely no pain. I have a major phobia of injections and needles but this, for some reason did not bother me at all. I have never had any problems with it since then, but it is essential that the piercer checks your tongue for viens and arteries being in the centre of your tongue, as if any of these are pierced, you can bleed to death!

The swelling (my tongue was in inch and a half thick) went down after 2days and the only side effect was slight lisping until the swelling subsided. I didn't need any time off work for this.

I could still eat normal foods and in fact went out for a pizza that night. Just be careful that you dont turn the bar sideways in your mouth and bite it accidentally as this hurts a lot. (this only really happens when your eating and before the swelling starts) My friend was more worried for me than I was!

I do know that you can't give blood for at least a year after having it pierced though. And to stop the metal ruining the enamel on your teeth, you can screw a plastic ball on top, or one that is metal with plastic on it.

Just a tip for buying bars, avoid the plastic cheap ones, they may look attractive but they do break very easily, make sure they have metal on the screw part.

Good luck with yours, i hope you have as much fun as i have had with mine!xx

i just got mine pierced! and i love it. it doesnt hurt that bad when you get it done! it hurts worse the next couple of days. yes it will swell! mine didnt too much. but it varies. dont eat anything with yeast in it! you will get a yeast infection in your mouth....im not kidding! Dont eat dairy products untill it heals a little. everytime u do eat, rinse with mouthwash! i havent been able to eat much! jello and pudding are good and easy to eat. but it sucks because it really doesnt feel you up...so u might loose a few pounds! i hope this helps you out!!
