Your mum needs to see her GP as it would be difficult for even a very good doctor to diagnose her without seeing the boil.

No I don't think that they are all connected.

Boils under the arm are very common.

Like daffy said....get an appt with her GP.
I've googled this:

Usually boils and abscesses under the arm are caused by clogged sweat glands. You should go see your doctor so that he can lance it or give you a medicated cream to clear it up. They are also caused by an ingrown hair.

So if your mum is sweating with the cold that could be the cause of the boil.
maybe an infection, you have glands under there, thats what the doctor is looking at when they ask you to lift up your arms, also in the neck

thanks alba :-) she as type 2 diabetes x
I've had 2 boil/lumps in an armpit.

The first one gave me a helluva fright - thought it was cancer. The GP said it was just a common thing that happens sometimes. Gave me a short course of antibiotics & "viola!"

Same with the 2nd one that I got 2 years later.

But of course it must be checked by a GP.
My sister once had a lump surgically removed from her armpit,it was a gland that strangely, when cut open was full of black ink that had somehow leeched there from a tattoo on her shoulder blade. The surgeon said he'd never seen anything like it in his career. :)
