Why do a lot of men refuse to take medicine or see a doctor when they are ill, or just generally put things like that and the dentist off for as long as humanly possible?

my bloke says he'd rather let his body deal with the illness itself. he reckons medicines just postpone/cover up the symptoms. He's a great believer in being able to 'think' yourself better, which i think has some truth in it, but obviously can;t work in all cases!

I used to avoid taking pills as much as possible as I preferred to let the pain subside by itself.  If it was that bad then I took a pill - usually headache etc.

Nowadays, I just pop a pill because my gf nags me to!

 

Dentist - just a natural phobia really but another thing my gf nags about because she is a dental nurse!

Probably the same reason some men don't like dancing. My husband has always said he doesn't want to look a prat & would rather disappear to the bar instead! He's just the same if he's ill, he'll never take time off work or go to the Doc's. He always goes for his six monthly dental check ups though - mainly 'cos he never needs any treatment!

I literally have to kick his arse down to the doc's.  CiderMonkey, my fella doesn't take them either and I also think there's truth in thinking yourself better but he won't even use vapourub or hot lemon/ honey or anything that's not even got chemicals in it!  I think he enjoys the sympathy and really plays on the "Woe is me" line.

Dentist's - on principle. They are a rip off (private one's, can't get NHS round our way). Also, gorillas and sharks never go to the dentist!

I'm the first to go down the doctor if there is something really wrong. I don't believe in wasting their time, which a LOT of people do. I think this is the mentality of some people who don't go to the docs. If they can get better on their tod (with the support of a loving partner or mum!), then they will. Other people just don't trust them. A friend of mine refuses to go because she thinks she'll just be sent away with a pack of paracetamol.
