I do think men need to see it to appreciate how hard it can be...not just the bonding thing. If men weren't at the births many would have the attitude that 'it can't be as bad as being kicked in the nuts'

When my cousin had her first child her husband and mother were in the room.
Mum was holding her hand and husband was at 'the business end'. As the baby arrived he said "See, it's just like shelling peas......."
My cousin was so incensed that she bit her mum's hand........

I think that - as in most things in life - experiences vary. For every woman who's delivery is 'compromised' by her partner's resence, another finds her experience is enhanced - there are simply no hard and fast rules.
I was present at the birth of our youngest daugther, and was very glad i was - and I know my wife was glads to have me there as well.
