Medical Records

Does anyone know if it would be possible to get medical records from my childhood (late 40's). I must have been a sickly kid and spent quite a while in convalescent homes, but I've no idea why. I can remember the names of the Gps. Parents gone now, should have asked when I had the chance!

If you go to your current GPs they will be able to tell you how far their records go back, and it might say where you transferred from before you joined. "Lloyd George" paper patient files are/were totally reliant on medical records being mailed from where you were treated at any time to your then GP, and sometimes got lost. Everything's now transferring to computer so in theory the GP can trace you back as far as they can with the records they've got. The other place you might enquire is the Primary Care Agency in your county (easily found on Google) because they are the body responsible for issuing medical cards so know which people are registered with which GPs - I don't know if they have historical/archived records but it is worth a try. Many thanks Boxtops. I'm lucky enough not to have seen my GP for quite a while now, but next time I do I'll ask. I'll try the
Primary Care Agencies in past and present counties.

NHS through your local hospital will be able to get your records......My GP was useless when I asked him; and he quoted £10ppage of photo copies!

You have a right to demand your past medical records for no charge.

I requested my medical records from my first pregnancy, shortly after giving birth - I got them but had to pay £50 which was the maximum charge. Call your current GPs surgery and ask the receptionist. He/she should be able to point you in the right direction.

I've been doing a bit of digging around, and it appears that after the war children who were on the thin side were declared "failing to thrive" by the school nurse, and could be sent to a convalescent home for "fattening up". As far as I can recall, I spent quite a while in at least two such homes and missed the first year of school.
Has anyone else had, or heard of such treatment?
