age spots

i have age - or sun - spots on one side of face only. i've tried that lightening cream, but doesn't work. i only want to lighten a small patch. can i do it myself cheaply - like dab something on - without resorting to drastic measures like face peels?

My mom had sun spots on her face...they looked like  giant freckles on her cheeks...She went to the Dermintoloigst and he prescribed her some medication to make them fad..then he told her to wear a 60SPF sunblock all the time, to prevent them from getting worse..the cream im not sure what its called it worked very well, and i cant hardly notice them.
