Are there varying degrees of Pneumonia?

I've just had a call to say my Grandad has it. He didn't look too bad yesterday :-(

It is usually treated with antibiotics successfully and I had it about 10 years ago. I don't think that it is the threat it used to be many years ago, but having said that my grandad was hospitalised with it back in the 50's when he was about 60 and lived until he was 90.

Pneumonia is often diagnosed by GP's with little clinical evidence of the disease.

He's been in hospital for over a week now Sqad due to a fall at home. He's ok one minute and then starts getting sick and bringing up green stuff. They only told us today that he had pneumonia. I'm worried....he's 86.

Is your grandad normally in good health despite his age ummmm? If so with the right treatment he should make a full recovery.

Aged 86...pneumonia confirmed by X-Rays, bringing up green phlegm......I would be worried too ummmm.

Good health....I wouldn't exactly say that. He's idle....he has home help, paid privately, twice a day. Apparently he went into hospital with bed sores so bad you could fit two fingers in...!!!

When I say he's idle....I mean really idle.

In that case I too would be worried ummmm. The elderly and infirm are quite prone to pneumonia and it can be quite nasty and difficult to treat successfully. At least in hosital he can be monitored closely and any changes in his condition will be picked up on quickly.

Yes...I'll be there tomorrow morning. Went to see him yesterday. I'll make sure to get to see him everyday now....

Aww ummmm! There are varying degrees. I had viral pnueumonia over my A levels and came through it fine though I was a lot younger at the time.

I was pretty much ok the day before, felt a bit off and thought it was hayfever then woke up the next morning and could hardly sit up or open my eyes and big problems breathing, mum called the Dr out and I was ambulanced to hospital.

He's in the best place and they should have been able to get him started on treatment straight away.

Let us know how he gets on.

they used to talk about 'double pneumonia' but this was apparently as a result of confusing 'pleural' with 'plural'. But yes, like most illnesses it can come in differing strengths. I had it for two months last year until they found the right antibiotics for me; worn out and wheezing and sleeping badly, but not in danger.

My Mum had double pneumonia when I was little.

The main concern really is his age. His mind is still very sharp but I think he might start going downhill now. He use to spend his days doing puzzles, even from when I was little, but he can't see well enough now.
