Not a good prognosis?

A 53 year old man. 17 stone with all the fat around his middle - a big beer belly in fact (though slim(ish) everywhere else.).
Smokes 20 to 30 a day. Drinks too much, especially beer and wine. Has a sedentary job. Has abused his body over the years by not lifting heavy weights in the proper manner etc.
Blood pressure 190/100.
Chronic low back pain. Developing prostate problems. Chest pain.
Would you want to be in his shoes? What would you do in his family's shoes, bearing in mind the man himself has no inclination to stop smoking or drinking?

McM - this is body & soul - not CB, you insensitive rat.
Ummm - he had a physical job (farming) for 30 years, it's only been the last 6 that have been sedentary.
Lottie - even though he jokes as though his days are numbered (he's 53!!!!), he thinks he's invincible.

Tambo - But I have always been up to scratch....... ;-)
This man is my one-day-to-be-ex-husband. I still care about the old sod, despite the past. Family's family. The way he's going he will never make ex-status - I shall be a widow, twice estranged, three times very strange.
He would lose weight & stop drinking if I went back to him, so he says. That is SO not going to happen, but I don't really want the old sc0te to die. yet.

That's what I tell him sqad.
The man's as stubborn as an ox - says he doesn't want to reach 'old age' if it means him being an invalid. personally I think that a degree of depression is behind a lot of his attitude (he still pines for me & tries to get me back, after 5 years....).
Oh well, I'd better be the one to restart the life insurance. Ta x

My Dad.
64 years old, weighs 22 Stone, Smokes 50-60 aday. Eats crap, Has insulin dependant diabetes, stressful job, this has been a way of life for him since he was nineteen years old. Was told 18months ago that he needs a bypass has he changed his lifestyle? No. Will he? No. Still has not had his bypass, now talking about a stent. I guess they don't want to spend money on someone who is not willing to change. And frankly I don't blame them.
And you know what, I bet he lives to a ripe old age.

Ultimately his decision. Mr LL had a heart attack last year. He wasn't particularly overweight (carried too much around his middle though), doesn't smoke and is not a huge drinker. BP normal. No diabetes. Was also active, but not the right sort of active apparently (not enough aerobic activity). However, he was a workacholic and liked his meat. Tended to snack on pies during his working day (which involves driving long distances and garages or good places to pick up a pie). I sort of knew it would happen. Fortunately, although a massive heart attack, he got immediate attention and a stent fitted within 1.5 hrs.
It has been a massive wake up call. He now walks briskly for at least a couple of miles a day, has changed the pie eating habits and is now actually too thin (in my opinion, but not medically). He is actually more healthy than he has been for years.
I wish he had listened to me, but he knew better. However, who knows. It may have happened anyway. My grandad died at 90, he smoked, drank whiskey every day and did no physical exercise. We really can't predict, I suppose.
Men will never listen and tend to be ostrich about their health and ignore any symptoms!!
