27 hours and not one puff of a cigarette later...
28 Answers
and I am considering getting dressed and going up the shop to buy a pack. Ive eaten plenty, drunk loads of coffee, read and re read everything about how its making my already atrocious set of lungs worse. i can;t use non smoking aids, they are just too strong for me, despite the equivalent of at least a pack a day habit. I've given up before for 3 years twice and 8 weeks at the beginning of the year. Im not pregnant or nursing a child this time and it not a bet like earlier in the year so .......I need some good motivational tips please?

Its wrong but it makes me feel better to know your suffering too; misery loves company - so sod living longer, feeling better, getting richer and getting rid of the lung pain - you need to stop smoking to help me stop too!!

I'm an AB lurker these days :)
That over indulgent session was years ago now - not sure I ever really recovered from a night out with you but no need to take any blame for my smoking, i've been rubbishly starting and stopping for ages since then. My most recent stupid starting was back in May when I was so over come by being able to smoke in the bars etc in Greece that I thought it would be rude not to.... I think this weekend might have been the end of my current smoking binge - I have now developed a cough though yukz
Cats, ferrets, rats, horses, chickens, pigs and griffin all say hellloooos x

I smoked because it relaxed me. calmed me down, and it was fashionable then, and somehow when I was smoking I could see reason, dunno how. They were my reasons
I have not smoked now for 11 years. I didn't want to stop but before I was due a major op the surgeon said he wanted me to stop smoking for 3 days before the op to rid my blood of nicotine. - I did that & my H gave up with me. That was the last day either of us smoked, ever,
But I still love the smell of a freshly lit ciggy.

I'm very pleased for you and hope you have the strength and courage to carry on with the "stop smoking" process.
I stopped smoking in 1960 and haven't touched one since.
The best bit of advice I can offer you is this:-
It is only the FIRST puff on the cigarette which goes to satisfy the craving, the rest of the cigarette goes towards putting nicotine in your body and only helps to feed the craving for more.
Therefore, if you feel that you MUST have a fag, just have one puff and then PUT THE FAG OUT AND SAVE IT FOR LATER.
Now go for a couple of hours without smoking if you can and then relight the old fag you saved (if you must) but only take ONE PUFF and then put it out and save it.
NEVER go below the couple of hours (or however long you managed) and try to extend the time gradually (by using extra strong mints if necessary) and stick to the new rule of "Just one Puff and put it OUT".
I stopped smoking completely after 10 days using this method of weaning (rather than using cold turkey) and it worked for me 50 years ago.
Keep at it and I hope the above is of some help to you.
Wak.

Stick at it, it's the biggest hill ive had to climb. I did only 2 weeks with patches but really suffered, so went cold turkey, that was 5 years ago. I am 55 now, and very slim and athletic and hill cycle 8 miles a day. I could never have done that when i was 40 years, i know you must be climbing the walls, but it will get easier, believe me. I will always be one fag away from 20 a day again, hang in there and the very best to you, all I can say is you wont regret it. Good luck.
