I've got an apointment at my local dentist for the first time later today after moving from one miles away.
I'm only going for a check up seeing as its my first time there, but to put it mildly im bricking it already, sweaty palms and everything (I'm such a baby)
Anyhoo...
Can you tell the dentist "look, unless my teeth are in danger of literally falling out my gob, im not having owt done" ? Or is that not the done thing to do? I'm only going really to 'keep on the books' so to speak.

If Boo is just needing a check up to stay on the books, but no treatment unless absolutely necessary, that is her prerogative. She will be getting the oral cancer check also, so it's worth going just for that. No one can force dental treatment on anyone, but it's her right just to ask for a check and an opinion.

You'll be fine B00, I'm sure it'll be over sooner than you think. For some inane reason I love going to the dentist. I do get a little nervous but I like the fact that I'll come out of there having had a clean and polish.
Andy, I used to love flying but I hate it now. I haven't been out of the country for about 4 years. I think it developed when I was flying back from Spain and we experienced really bad turbulance and the plane was juddering about all over the place.

BOO. Seriously, go in and admit how terrified you are. Dentists are used to it. Mine asks all his new patients if they are frightened of dentists. If he knows you are sh1t scared he will know exactly the best way to treat you
(tie you to the chair perhaps!! - only joking)
Take care BOO. I am the same with any hospital appointments and not much better even going to the doctors. Funnily enough I am fine with dentists.

Boo....not enought time this time but hypnotherapy might help... and if this dentist isn't understanding look for one that is you may find one that specialises in nervous patients...they actually advertise this... I'm as bad....I use relaxation techniques but I've had a lot of practice using them...
LOL BOO. My problem is that I really don't care what dentists do to me as long as they ensure I don't feel any pain. But I am terrified of what Doctors or Hospitals might tell me is wrong with me and I am a total ostrich. Even having my blood pressure checked is an ordeal and I certainly won't do it myself!!
See, we all have fears of some sort or another.
Good luck. You will be fine!!

Howdy BOO, I was in the dentist's chair at 8:20 this morning and I can confirm that today is the ideal day for a check-up. A quick look around, scale and polish and presto magico, that'll be £10.20 please and we'll see you in 6 months.
I used to be an armrest gripper after a very bad experience as a child and I know you don't like the oft repeated "modern dentistry is painless" line but the reason it's oft repeated is, it's true.
I'm sure your dentist didn't study all those years to learn how to inflict pain, anybody could do that. As others have said have a chat, have a valium (nice drug) and try to recall what the experience with the abcess was like. You know deep down that a visit to a health professional can't be worse than that!
Come on, join the happy smile club. Good luck! :D
