Hi Guys,

What's the most effective excerise which will burn more calories?  I am told that jogging and cycling are most effective.

Cheers ABer's

You have to raise heartrate and blood pressure. Aim to 'break sweat'.

I hate jogging, its dangers are under rated. I ran for years, and can no longer run, due to the damage it did me, and I go for 2 operations this year. Jogging is worse, that slow bounce.

Cycling is great, great burner, but no impact (apart from badly driven buses).

Swimming is my favourite, full body workout, no impact (apart from the odd fat lane-changer).

Thanks JOEYSHABLYDO, I might ask for a bike for my Birthday!

swimming burns the most calories over the shortest time - you have to work against the resistance of the water. Breaststroke burns more calories than crawl.
weight training actually burns more calories than the above mentioned activities. However you will not lose weight by weight training as I suspect that is what you are really asking.

Cardio-Vasculor is the best for burning calories, that includes running/ power walking, skipping, rowing machine, stepping machine.  Cycling isn't that effective at burning calories, or at least that is what the trainer told me on my induction at the gym.

Swimming is good for all round fitness as it works nearly all of the mucles in your body.

Perhaps I'll pass on the bike thing and go swimming instead.

Cheers all

Natalie, you are mistaken. 30 mins weight training would burn off more calories than 30 mins jogging for example. Like I said though you will not lose any weight this way as you increase your muscle size and body mass.

Don't confuse the fact that just burning calories is not the same as losing weight. Calories are energy not fat.

Cardio vascular exercise is the best way to burn calories in order to lose weight as you do not increase body mass beyond the amount of energy you are using..

I'm not mistaken - I said CV was best at burning cals, I didn't mention losing weight!  I'm not the one getting confused buddy!  Well I wasn't until now...... ;o)

But I was probably wrong about the jogging.

Exercise was even a word that was part of my vocabulary a year ago!

Now, now ABer's, I didn't mean for this to get into a slagging match.

I think you misread my post Natalie..... CV is best for "burning calories in order to lose weight"

BUT

you actually burn more calories with weight training.

Geez, there was me thinking any exercise is good for you and simple!  I feel proud when a walk an extra bus stop......
Mowbray - I'm joking!

Hi natalie_1982 - i feel proud when I walk to the pub.

Thanks for all your answers.

Next you'll be telling me that once you're in the pub with a pint it doesn't count as weightlifting.  Or pool doesn't count as half an hours exercise......

skipping rocks.

and you can lose fat just by weight training, a calorie deficit is a calorie deficit and your body is unlikely to pile on the pounds in one. Cardio is just to expedite the process which is 90% due to diet.

natalie_1982 - hee, hee.  Does walking to the bar to buy pints and walking to the loo count as loosing calories??

A friend of mine told me that Beer (real ale's, not lager), are supposed to have very little calories as opposed to lager.

I could just have a pint........just thought, it's St Patrick's day today. Looks as though I'll have to take a trip to the local for a pint of Guiness or twelve I mean't two.

The walk will do me good though:-)

I once lost three stones in three months by exercising on my rowing machine, and watching what I ate. Then the missus made me stop.
