My Dad is 81 has had a chest infection last week - he has just finished his Amoxcillian and seemed o.k, but it left him with a irritating cough. This morning his voice is all horse.
He managed to get an appointment at the Docs. She examined him and has prescribed Predmisolone 5mg. He has to take it for a week. She said take 6 tablets straight away and the same every day for a week.

Obviously the coughing has made his airways inflammed, as this tablet is a steriod.

Do you think it sounds right, taking six 5mg tablets all at once every day ?

I am not Squad., But six tablets a day for a short course is normal. I have had to do it on many occasions.

xx
I hope he recovers well DEN x
Den53, that is quite a normal dose, We have a gentleman where I work, He has them for the same condition quite frequently.
I was told that a short course at that dose gives the body a chance to rest in order that healing can take place (or something like that)

I have had it for chest problems and skin problems - 6 tablets a day for 7 days!!

So its o.k to take the 6 tablets all at once and not space them out during the day.
I was just checking to make sure my Dad had got it right.
My Mum used to have steroids and yes all at once and not spaced out is normal.

Many Thanks, Lottie, Joy, Ratter and Wolfy - for your input. xx

As I said, I think his airways are inflammed due to the persistant tickly cough he has been left with.
In the US they often go 6,5,4,3,2,1 re steroids over six days if that is any help
Just to confirm that yes, as Woofie says, not spaced out is perfectly normal!!

Hope he feels better soon.

I know I always felt great for the week I was on Steroids!! On top of the world!!
dt, at one time that was the practice here. but now they prescribe the full dose once per day
It used to do wonders for my Mum's appetite...she got not very good at eating.

Lottie - if they make you feel on top of the world, I think I could do with some then.
It's quite sad after six days when you come off it and aches and pains and things come back!!
Den.......all answered quite correctly....this is a normal routine for such a condition.

I would have given it as a spray........but that is just a personal thing.
Sprays are not so strong or quick acting if I remember correctly Squad. I had sprays after the quick fix with the tablets.
nasal or oral spray sqad ? what would be the benefits of using the spray . rather than oral ?
I thought Sqad meant the asthma type sprays Anne, not nasal sprays. I had them for a long time for a lung problem, but had to have the tablets for the really hard times!!
anne.....oral steroid spray.....the advantage would be that the steroid action would be at the site of the problem.............throat and lungs...... whereas systemic steroids might have systemic effects
Yes they did have systemic effects, all my arthitic aches and pains disappeared and I felt wonderful!! ;o)

A very nice side effect!!
