Don't people know the difference between being widowed and divorced?.

My wife passed away in 2003 with cancer when we lived in London.
We were in our early 50's.
I have come back to the Midlands to live with my father after being retired early and often I am asked where my wife is to which I reply I am widowed.
People always pass on the message to other people I am divorced and when I speak to them again the always incorrectly say I am divorced.
Am I the only man to be widowed at my age in the West Midlands?.
I am now in my early 60's.

I think you must just happen to know some very strange folk. Or maybe they just don't take in what is told to them.

I think these days 'widdowed' is not used as much - try saying 'my dear wife passed away a few years ago'. My first husband died at the age of 39 and i was widdowed age 32. I remember someone asking me what my husband did for a living and I said i was a widdow and they burst out laughing - said' oh he's a workoholic then?' to which i replied 'no he's dead' - the person needless to say was very embarrassed but from then on I just used to say he died.....
