How do you get a good one ?
Any ways of increasing the social circle ?

what sort of event is it? Don't forget your aim shouldn't be "make friends" at this stage, more to "be friendly" - friends aren't made in one conversation .

It depends on what you mean by "good".
Do you already have one that consists of a few people but you want 'better' ? If so, maybe you need to take stock of what you've already got and re-assess their positive attributes then ask yourself why you're dissatisfied with them.
If you *are* happy with the circle you already have but want to 'branch out' and find more friends, the best answer IMO is to make sure you are around when parties are being discussed then go to as many as you can !
If that's no good then maybe you just need to hang out with the 'sub circles' of individual friends from that group if they'll let you.
What is your age-group ?

I for one love it. I can talk to strangers as if I already know them if they'll let me, and it works both ways. I think I'm pretty good at fathoming people out on a first encounter and I can tell fairly soon if they are types I can get along with or not. We *should* be able to communicate like this, human beings are social animals.
i would say increase friends and acquaintances the same gender as you, through voluntary and interest groups (eg. painting, walking, choir, local history) AND then consolodate these new interests and friends by having coffee, dinner or trips out!
everyone knows someone who will suit a singleton friend, and this is how new non-scary 'relationships' are made ...
