Just finished watching the program on battered men. It was very disturbing viewing and I wondered how common this problem was. The program featured a young man who was killed by his partner after a very volatile relationship with her. It was found that the young man's partner had a split personality disorder. Is this problem rare and does anyone know of similar stories.

OMG! When was this programme on? This is something I have been talking about to people for a very long time, even having an argument with a woman who worked for a charity for battered women and she then refuted my comment about men being beaten by their wives! So I set a few records straight lol. There was this 1 story that I know of, where this young(ish) woman stabbed her boyfriend clean through the abdomen and left himon the floor in his own blood holding in his intestines because they had an argument and she didn't get her own way, after a while when she realised he was dying she called the police and an ambulance but the charges against her were dropped because it was just her word against his.
Its more common than you think, I've known a few couples were the female was the more dominant partner - usually verbally but I've also known one couple where he frequently had a black eye or bruised face - he eventually left her because he was afraid he might hit back, sadly most of his friends thought it was funny....
my sentiments exactly! the thing is it's only a very very very small percentage of this type of crime that gets reported to embarrassment or even the fact that the police dismiss it as poppycock!

Thank you for your replys. The program was on channel 5 on Monday night at 10 p.m. I personally know of someone in such a relationship where sadly he did hit back and ended up with a criminal record. Despite this he still continues with the relationship causing his family a great deal of worry. Love is blind they say.
Have you read 'Not Guilty: In Defence of the Modern Man' by David Thomas? This book includes a chapter on battered men, including a case of an army sergeant who shot himself in the head after constant physical attack by his wife in front of their kids.

As Mr Thomas points out, the 'hen-pecked husband' is a much loved figure of fun and for this reason does not get serious attention from society.
