Hi, i have always been a big girl(fat) around 15 to 16 stone and having an underactive thyroid has not helped matters, althougth not an excuse at all, for the last 6 years i have been on medication to help reduce my weight and control my throid, even with all this help i have only managed to lose 10% of my starting body weight which the doctors say is a sucess althought i cant see it myself, Well why i have been having all this going on i have had a lot of troble with my monthly syscal in fact i cant say the last time i see one! which has you can imagen being a 24 year old women is a conserning problem, so my doctor refferd me to go and see Endocrine at NEWHAM HOSPIAL there(today 28/08/07) i see a CONSULTANT called DR ********* who told me that i should "STARVE myself of food in order to lose weight!!" (bare in mind this doctor is ment to help with women problems, not weight loss) i then said to him "so your telling me to be ANOREXIC" to that he replyed "well lets not put a label on it, but yes maybe Starve yourself will make you loss weight" well with this you can imagen how upset and hurt i was, knowning that i do everything i can to maintain my weight loss. I feel disgusted that someone in he posistion can get away with tell young girls to STARVE there selfs. I guess im lucky im not easyly lead and i would never STARVE myself but there may be girls out there that would hear him say it is ok to starve yourself and that you should and actully do it. Some people. sorry but i needed to share this with everyone!
Hello there , well isn't it a good thing you have the sense to realise that starving is no advise that should ever be given to anyone .Did the consultant address the endocrine problems or take a blood sample btw ?
You will be understandably upset having been spoken to like that when you went there expecting expert help and a diagnosis .
In my opinion, after relating the contents of "what a consultant says" to a few people, the end result bears no relation to the actual original words.
Don't be too harsh spanky, just try and lose weight and if you are not happy, then I hope that you have a follow up appt to see your consultant.
Now, I know this sounds weird but maybe he should have clarified what he meant. When I first started losing weight, insulin resistance was my problem, I had to starve for a day (water only), then eat 500 calories the next day and increase up to 1500 day by day, in 100 calorie steps.
Anyway it worked for me!
Maybe he was just being insensitive and saying starve for you. Have you ever been referred to a dietitian?
