My friend and her husband are getting divorced after 30 years of marriage. It is all amicable but they have a problem. The house will be sold and money shared equally but they don't know how to decide who gets what furniture. Any SENSIBLE suggestions would be most welcome and I will pass them on. TIA

Well it's daft to take a bit each from every room, so I'd opt to have it from different rooms but split the white goods by value....
if they're in similar financial situations, they just have to share it out. they could write a list of what each would particularly like, and divvy it out. if they can't agree they'll have to flip a coin on some items.
why not go around the house and take it in turns to choose an item?
take turns in choosing an item, toss a coin to see who goes first.
Well I have a chainsaw if they want to do the sofa and kitchen table
: )

Just talk together about it .. That's always the best way .. right?!
Or are they like squabbling kids?
It all depends on where they are both moving into, no good taking a 6ft dining tabel to a one bed flat. Plus if anything has been in the marriage more than a few years it might be worth flogging the lot on ebay and splitting the proceeds for a fresh start
If they are both setting up separate houses/flats then they just have to agree amongst themselves. This really isn't rocket science - you have the dining room suite and I'll have the sofa.
We did what sara suggested....made a list, then discussed what we each wanted. It was quite amicable as we each had different favourites...but I,as the one on the much lower income, ended up with fewer 'basics'..ie-sofa and bed.
In my family in this sort of situation (and following deaths) people went round and put stickers on what they wanted (nice huh) but probably a better solution would be, as others have suggested, to go round together and and pick things evenly and fairly.
