Jane I guarantee they DO NOT use petrol to refine sugar ! Where ever did you get that ridiculous idea from?
The sugar beet or cane is shredded and crushed to extract the 'juice' which is filtered to get rid of the fibre. It is then dissolved in water and filtered again.
The solution is then heated to drive off the water until the sugar starts to crystallise out. This is now 'raw' or 'molasses' sugar.
White sugar is made by dissolving raw sugar in water again with further filtration and spinning in a centrifuge to remove colour and recrystallised as white or refined sugar. Sugar does not even dissolve in petrol so it would be impossible to use petrol to 'refine' it as well as far too expensive!

Your tip is good, but I just like pure water without lemon.

EDDIE51, I watched a TV programme about stuff they use to refine sugar some time ago. It's not that simple. As a person knowing chemistry very well, you should understand that no nutritive value is left in sugar after its refinement, only calories. I also watched a programme on BBC about two scientists. One discovered the hazards of sugar and became an outcast, because people didn't want to hear any unpleasant information and big food companies were dead against loosing any money they could earn on sugar and sweet products. And another scientist became very popular 'cause he said,'Sugar is OK'. And only later they found out that the first scientist, expelled from all the scientific societies, was right. If you wish, you can have a look at some sugar-related deseases: http:// nancyap pleton. com/141 -reason s-sugar -ruins- your-he alth/
