I received this letter this morning, my tax office is in Lancashire.

Dear Applicant:

An Income Tax repayment is a refund of tax that you've overpaid.
So, if you’ve paid too much tax for example through your job or pension this year or in previous years
HMRC will send you a repayment.
You’ll get the repayment by bank transfer directly to your credit or debit card.

After the last annual calculations of your fiscal activity we have determined that you are eligible
to receive a tax refund of 314.77 GBP.

Due to the high volume of refunds due you must complete the online application
In oder to process your refund you will need to complete the application form attached to this email.
Your refund may take up to 1 - 2 days to process please make sure you complete the form correctly.

Please download the form attached to this email and open it in a web browser. Once opened, you will be provided with steps to
refund your money as soon as possible.

This has become a common scam in recent years. The dead give-away is the fact that the email doesn't contain your name or NI number.

Funnily enough I did get a letter from the tax man today, saying they owe me money. No link or form to fill out, luckily mine is genuine.

I get an email once a week from the tax man, saying they want to give me a refund, and need my bank details. Let them write. I also get a mail every week telling me my Santander bank account has had some unusual activity, and they need me to confirm details or the account will be suspended. I expect it is unusual activity, as i don't have a santander bank account. But, Some people may be fooled into disclosing info.

get a hotmail e-mail account, soon get loads of phishing and rubbish, keeps you busy for hours.

Dear applicant is also a good clue.
You are lucky if this is the first you have received. One of my email addresses gets at least 5 phishing emails a day ostensibly from banks/paypal/ student finance/HMRC, Nigerian banks,etc, none of whom seem to know my name.

You're lucky you only get 5 Factor, I get probably 10-20 a day.

I used to get loads but have not had any for nearly 3 years since I moved house and went onto g.mail. I think members of various sites and even certain banks are more vulnerable to these sorts of rubbish.
