No. You should ask the payer to pay you by international interbank transfer. That means that they get their bank to send the money direct to your bank account. The banks sort out the exchange for them (and you). They fill in a form at their bank. They'll need your full bank details which will include the IBAN (international bank account number) of your account and, no doubt, the SWIFTBIC code of your bank.Your bank will have these . In fact they are probably on your bank statements

There's a charge for this service for the sender and the recipient (unless the sender arranges for all the charges to be paid by himself) There is usually an express, more expensive, and a standard speed for these transfers but they only take a few working days when the countries concerned are like Canada and the UK.
I've been assuming that the payment will be of a size to make the charges worthwhile, not that they are very high. There, are, I'm sure, ways of sending a small sum internationally (there used to be, may still be , international money orders , like international postal orders, for this purpose)
It will be very easy to deposit it in a UK bank account. Very easy.

But it will cost a bomb in fees. Think 20 ish, whatever the value of the cheque.

The Canadian Post Office sell money orders that can be cashed at a UK Post Office - if it's a small sum that's the best way forward. Expect to wait around while they phone to check it's not a forgery - otherise starightforward,
