Bank/credit rating

8 years ago, a friend of mine was moving abroad. A couple of months before he went, he had a big dispute with his bank (RBS I think). Subsequently (against my and others' advice), he moved abroad without paying the approx £2,000 overdraft that he owed them. He's now back in Blighty. Will this debt still be on records at the bank? Will it be on his credit file?

Hope so, but my recollection of how how credit files work is that it won't be. However RBS may still be chasing him for the money

oh yes, they have long memories. He emigrated for the sake of 2k, what a plonker!

I think the emigration was despite of the 2k, not because of it.

I would say yes, if you call for a credit report it can go back ages.

Bennie-although i think the debt may disappear off the credit reports are a period (maybe 6 years), a debt collector can still chase up a debt that is more than 6 years old. And if you are thinking it is statute barred then that is incorrect as the debtor failed to notify them of his new address

The debt will always be on record at the RBS, they will never forgive him i'm afraid. It will be on his credit file, they can stay on in excess of 6 years.
