I will explain with an example:

  1. What is % difference between 2000 and 2500?
  2. Divide 2000 by 2500, answer 0.8
  3. Multiply answer by 100, answer 80 (%)
  4. Therefore 2000 is 80% of 2500, hence %age difference is 100% minus 80% which is of course 20%.
  5. Difference between 2000 & 2500 is 20%
In the example given, 2000 is 80% of 2500 BUT 2500 is 125% of 2000 so the percentage difference is 25%.
It all depends on where your starting point of 100% is before you can work out a percentage difference.
