You have to work 16 hours or more a week to get it.

Son is 25 and in a job that pays minimum wage, he also rents the flat he is living in and is struggling with money, I just wondered if this would be available to him.
Is there any way that he could perhaps get a rent rebate, Traci ?
My hairdresser is single and lives in rented accommodation. I don't know about WTC but she certainly gets a chunk of her rent and all her council tax paid for.
Come to think of it, I also know a single working man who gets WTC.
Good luck xx

Thanks all, I will get him to look into it.
when i was claiming working tax credits you had to work a minimum of 30 hours a week if you had no children and the amount you get depends on what you earnt the year before you claimed.you can do a quick check here to find out what help he may be entitled to. http://www.moneysavin...family/benefits-check
Definately 16 hours for working tax credit , I get it and I work 16 hours a week. I am very near certain family tax credit is 16 hours min as well.

Get your son to apply for rent rebate and working tax credit , they can only say no . He can't end up worse off.
Get him to use this calculator it is very good and will tell him what he is entitled to.

Yes. I claim them and I live alone.
http://www.direct.gov...tthebasics/DG_172728. if you are 25 years old or older and have no children you need to work at least 30 hours a week to claim working tax credit unless you have a disability.
that link dosnt appear to be working but either google it or give them a call and they will be able to advise you.
Eddie - it is 30 hours unless you are in a group to which different rules apply (which you obviously are). I suggest Traci gets her son to ring the tax credit line 0345 300 3900 & see whether he is entitled.

If he does get any working tax credit it will be treated as income in working out how much (if any) housing benefit and council tax benefit he might be entitled to. He needs to claim those from his local council.
