Immigration Bond

Mrs May proposes to charge any intending immigrants from India, Pakistan, Sri Lanka,Bangladesh, Nigeria, or Ghana £3,00 each before any application to enter will be considered. The scheme will be extended in due course to other high risk countries. (No, that does not include Romania) [The Sunday Times]
This is part of her plan to reduce immigration. Bring me your poor, your huddled masses? Er,no! The scheme is similar to that used in Australia. A good idea? Will it work? Will it stop Tory voters going to UKIP?

Lets answer the last question first !
Yes, it will probably stop some Tory voters from going to BNP-lite, so May will have done her party a favour. But behind all this is May's preparation for her role as the new Tory Leader. She is trying to out do Boris at every turn.
She and the rest of the Tory front bench will keep on banging the anti-immigrant drum until May 2015, so I guess we will all have to get used to it.
Never mind that the NHS is collapsing around our ears, unemployment amongst young people is out of control, etc.....just keep bashing immigrants.

mikey.....
\\Never mind that the NHS is collapsing around our ears, unemployment amongst young people is out of control, etc.....just keep bashing immigrants. \\
Yes employment is a problem throughout the EU, but nothing like that of Spain, which is a disaster for the under 25s.
The NHS has been collapsing, certainly for the past 30 years at least and if the NHS was "bashed" at that time, then almost certainly lives would have been saved. But let a Political Party of either persuasion suggest that the NHS needed re-organisiation, they would have been kicked into the "long grass" and remained there for at least three Parliaments.
£3,000?...I agree it is a "gimmick" but as naomi said in her post..."gate , horse, bolted"
But hey!...what about the seat of decency and democracy...the UK..a beckoning and welcoming signal to all...we are a decent society.......?

I am getting worried Sqad, about the decline in the NHS. My brother suffered a nasty head injury in February and he is still in the Neurology Ward of a certain big Hospital in South Wales. His medical care has been good but his nursing care leaves a lot to be desired. We have seen all the kind of things that have made the news lately.....putting water where he can't reach, leaving him in soaking wet pads for hours on end, disconnecting his call button, etc.
We have kicked up a big fuss and pulled a few strings in Management, and its got better but these kind of things just shouldn't happen. You have spent a lot of your working life in the NHS ( I presume ? ) What has gone wrong ? It can't just be down to staffing levels surely ?

mikey......I can only say and recall the thoughts of "yesteryear"..."anecdotal" which does not go down well on AB.....;-)
For the nurses..there seems to be no recognizable hierarchy,,student nurse, staff nurse sister, matron and so on....nobody seems to b accountable to anybody.
Smartness......the nurses were smartly dressed and differing uniforms in differing colours differentiated ranks and discipline was so important with the comfort of the patient paramount. Yes, i know ,medicine has changed, but the needs of the patient haven't.
I could go on about nursing degrees, smartness, accountability, discipline and pride in the profession of nursing and medicine, but i feel that it would fall on stoney ground.
You brother will get fabulous care in a central Neurosurgical unit anywhere in the UK......I wish him well.

that was then, things have changed a lot in our dear old NHS. Not least massive backside covering up, deaths by the bucketload through carelessness, negligence, take your pick, all the while the NHS hospitals are often unclean, unsafe places. Caring, and common sense seem to have gone the way of the dodo. Nurses that don't put patients first and foremost shouldn't be in the profession, as to doctors, some would be better off getting other jobs, preferably not dealing with members of the public.
