Does anyone know what makes one Beatrix Potter Tom Kitten 50p worth a lot of money while another is worth just a couple of pounds?

As far as the Beatrix Potter 50p goes Tom Kitten is not rare at all.

I saw that and thought as much, yet there are some Tom Kittens for sale on ebay for hundreds and even thousands of pounds. Are these just chancers?
They are hoping someone wants it to complete a set.
I've collected the Beatrix Potter 50p's since they started, and I think I might have five Tom kittens.
The third set released I found was the hardest to get, as shown in the link.

But they are available for £1.99 too. As you say, i guess they are hoping someone is daft enough to pay that to complete a set on a day when they look and only the expensive ones are available.

I did just wonder if there is a makers error on some of them or something.
Pay no attention to the values on eBay.There's loads of folk on there saying they have rare one-pound or two-pound coins because the inscription on the edge is the wrong way up.

That's because the Mint put the inscription on the blanks BEFORE they strike them with the heads and tails so there IS NO right way up.
Couldn't agree more with what THECORBYLOON said Maydup.
Keep checking your change, and fingers crossed you find a Kew Gardens 50p ; ))
The Kew Gardens 50p coin is the rarest but the Mint issued a tenth anniversary version of it.

If it says "2019" on it, it's not the original one.

Thanks Sam I will. One good reason for paying cash and not going contactless just for a pint of milk!

Good point there Thecorbyloon, as a novice I might not have remembered it was 2009 and not 2019 that it was first issued.
its only worth what some fool will pay.
Just because people try sell things for a lot of money doesn't mean they're worth it.

All it takes is one idiot to pay the price not knowing the value of the coin and people think it then becomes that value.

Not the case.
